Chapter 0 – Backstory

Please Note that there is no sex or sexual themes in this chapter but will be starting in Chapter 1. This is purely to set the scene and prepare for the main story.

The lore of this story is based loosely on The New Order: The Last Days of Europe. This is an alternative historical scenario where Nazi Germany wins the Second World War and dominates the European continent.
Our main protagonist is Anna Bäker, a German Jew who has kept her identity secret since childhood. She dreams of escaping the Reich and fleeing to the freest place in the world, the United States of America. She will have to use all of her cunning and guile to evade capture and reach her final destination.
The story will contain issues surrounding Nazism and other forms of Far Right ideology so please be advised before proceeding.

The year is 1964, and the Fuhrer is dead. It reads in the headline of every newspaper in Berlin and the entire continent. He was assassinated by an unknown Japanese assassin. “Oh no!” thought Anna as she quickly flicked to the first page to read the rest of the article.
The Fuhrer is dead it reads, assassinated by a lone gunman from the Empire of Japan.
Anna stared at the page in disbelief. Although she felt no sadness reading this news she knew that the situation within the Reich would only get direr.
She decided that now more than ever she needed to escape. For too long she had toiled away in secret and dreamt of living in freedom. Being a Jew in Europe at this time was a rarity but to be in the heart of the Reich was even more so.

She started walking back to her apartment block, quickening the pace as she neared her destination. Arriving moments later, she fumbled with her keys and dropped them on the floor. She retrieved them and was met with a face at the door. It was her neighbour, Herr Weber. He was an elderly gentleman who fought in the first world war. He would proudly state this to everyone showing his medals and shouting Heil Kaiser Wilhelm. How he was still alive was beyond Anna. To have any dissenting views of the Nazi party was normally a quick way to get in a cell or worse.
“Good Morning Anna, what has you all flustered this morning?” he inquired with his usual inquisitive tone. “It’s the Fuhrer!” she said somewhat panicked. The old man’s smile faded and his eyes widened. It’s interesting… but what would make a young Jewish girl like you so upset over that?” he asked coldly and calculatedly. Anna’s body became completely ice cold. How did he know she was Jewish? She had not told anyone.
Herr Weber looked at the girl and smiled. “Come with me,” he said as he hobbled back to his apartment. Anna still stricken with fear couldn’t move. She didn’t know whether to run or collapse. The old man called from the foyer “Oh for heaven’s sake pick yourself up girl, and get in here quickly. It’s not going to be the last time someone calls you that I can guarantee”.

Anna entered Herr Weber’s abode. “Please make yourself at home. I don’t bite you know” he laughed. Anna sat there petrified wondering whether this was it. Was she going to be rounded up and taken to Auschwitz or Treblinka? Or simply be taken to the alley and shot to be left for the crows?
Herr Weber returned a few minutes later with coffee. “There’s milk and sugar too please help yourself” he sighed, lowering the tray onto the table.
“Now you’re probably wondering Frauline Bäker how does this old coot recognize that I am Jewish? How did he become aware? I may be old and left the army in 1919 but old habits die hard you know. I like to know who my neighbours are. In case they need my help or I… need theirs.” he said as he lit a match to smoke his pipe. “Cigarette?” he asked. Anna took him up on his offer. If this was to be her final hours then might as well have some solace even if it was likely to kill her in the end.
“Do you know how I know about you, Frauline?” he asked. Anna shook her head still trembling at the thought of being outed after all this time.
“I used to be part of the Sicherheitspolizei. After the war, I needed money and didn’t want to work in factories or mills so I became an internal communications officer. It was my job to know everything about everyone. I knew you were Jewish from the moment you stepped into this apartment five years ago. I harbour no ill will towards the Jews. I fought with many brave Jewish men on the Eastern and Western fronts. A Jewish man saved my life you know at the battle of Passchendaele in 1917.” Anna felt slightly more at ease hearing this. She always saw Herr Weber as a grandfather who regales her with stories of his wartime experiences.
“But now that the Fuhrer is dead… this changes everything, with the keystone missing, the bridge will crumble, I may not care much for politics but this is going to be a messy situation in the coming weeks. Too many men desire the greatest power and only one can wield it. We can only hold our breath as to who will take power, whether it be Goring, Bormann, Speer or heavens forbid that snake Himmler and his cronies”, sneering at the idea that the upstart chicken farmer will take power and turn Germany and Europe at large into a nightmare dystopia.
He looked over at Anna and held her hand in his. “You must leave Europe, Anna. It is not safe for you anymore, the fact that you and your family have survived for this long is a miracle. But it will get worse. This country will be at war with itself in the coming months.” His words were stern but comforting to Anna.

“But where will I go?” she cried. “I barely have enough money to pay for my apartment let alone escape the continent”. “I will help you as much as I can,” said Herr Weber calmly. “As much as my old bones allow, follow me to the drawing room.”
The pair walked into the room and Herr Weber flicked on the light switch. A large wooden table lay in the middle. “Hand me that scroll over there, will you?” he asked, pointing to the large map in the umbrella stand. He unfurled it and grabbed different coloured pins. “Now we are here in Berlin” poking a red pin into the map, “And these are the most ideal ports of exit on the continent. You have Lisbon in Portugal, Seville in Spain, Bordeaux in France, and Dublin in Ireland. You can most likely conclude that these are all on the other side of the continent. However, these are your most valuable chances of escaping to the free world on the other side of the Atlantic. I will not lie to you Frauline this trip will not be easy and could very well lead to your death.”
Anna studied the map and looked at all of these names she has only dreamt about. “What about London?” she said. “No,” he said with his hand on his chin, “London is too big a port and lacks access to the Americas. The three locations mentioned are the only ports in which trade between the Reich and the Western Hemisphere takes place. And besides London is crawling with spies. If the Nazis don’t get you the English will and they will only send you back home. No… you must choose one of the three.”

Minutes passed, turning into hours, Anna and Herr Weber discussing all the eventual outcomes of each of the three exit ports. “You know Frauline,” he said as he sat in his armchair. It has been wonderful having you here. I haven’t had someone to talk to like this in a very long time, not since my wife, god rest her, passed away three years ago. It is just a shame that the circumstances were not as amicable as could be.” He lit his pipe and relaxed.
Anna kept studying the map, uncertain of her most likely chance of escape. “What would be the safest route?” Anna asked.
“None of them” he called back laughing, “No matter which way you go you’ll be heading through dangerous lands. Lisbon and Seville you will need to go through the Italian Empire and the remnants of the French State before entering the Iberian Penisula, and Dublin you will need to head through the hellscape which is the Ordensstaat Burgund before making your way to England and then Ireland”.

As the sun set on the old capital, Herr Weber returned to the room. “So have you decided which way to go?” he asked. “Yes” Anna replied. “I will go to Dublin. Whilst it is a more dangerous route it will be easier. I can speak English fairly well whereas I cannot speak Spanish or Portuguese.”

“A wise decision young lady” he replied. “Now before you leave, please take this” he handed her a passport and two letters. “Take the passport to the photography shop down Hauptstrasse and ask to speak with Herr Schmied. He will sort your photo out. In the letters are proof of authentication for the passport and right to travel within Germany. In addition, there is a deposit of 1000RM, which should get you to Ireland. But please keep it safe, Anna! “May God watch over you,” he said as he kissed her cheek.

Anna ran up to her apartment and quickly grabbed her suitcase, throwing in spare clothes her English dictionary and the remainder of her savings. With this all in tow she exited the building and threw her keys in a nearby bush before heading to the photography shop.

She entered and asked to speak with Herr Schmied. A tall spindly looking man came out and smiled. “Good evening young lady, how can I help?”
“I was told that you could get my photo developed for a passport,” she said. “Indeed I can.” He replied “Do you have the passport on you?” Anna handed it over to him and he looked at the details. He looked at her and smiled, “Come this way Frauline Weber and we’ll get this done for you as quickly as possible”. “Frauline Weber?” thought Anna but that couldn’t be right. Within an hour the photo was taken and developed. “As you are the granddaughter of Herr Weber I could not take any payment from you. He is an honourable man and I owe him so please take this” he said.

Anna looked at her passport and saw Anna Weber in black and white. She couldn’t believe her eyes. How did he have all of her details? But she didn’t question this and left the shop.

She started walking to the Berlin Hauptbahnhof where she could catch a train to the Rhineland and begin her journey to freedom. Within the next hour she boarded the night train to Köln, she looked out at the buildings that passed by. A large weight was lifted from her shoulders, but she still felt that there were so many questions to answer. Why did she need to leave? Why was Herr Weber so incitant that she leave. Anna thought about these long into the night until she could no longer keep her eyes open and fell asleep.

End.

It’s sounds great, but do a little homework if Hitler did depend so much on Hating and the Nazi air force, and went more with his Paper tanks and the desert fox Rimmel he would have won the war
