Chapter 1
=========

The robed, hooded figure stood before me.

“This is serious business.” He said. “I knew this day would eventually come.”

Joran’s tone amplified my already exponentially growing nervousness. I was shaking so much it felt like I was sitting on an off-balance clothes washer during the spin cycle. My knees felt as though they would buckle. My mouth went dry, and never in my life had I had a more difficult time choking back tears.

“Are you ready?” Joran asked, with a devious smirk on his face.

“Yes…” I squeaked out, sounding tinier than a field mouse.

“Then let us begin!” He bellowed with a hearty laugh. I smiled sheepishly but still felt like my legs were turning into jello. I couldn’t believe this was happening. In all my life, in all of the various scenarios that danced around in my mind when it wandered, I would never have guessed in a thousand years that this would be my fate. Nearby Saphira stood silently, her demeanor only betraying a tear trickling down her muzzle.

Organ music began playing, and I could feel my heart beating in my throat. I couldn’t speak now if my life depended on it. I could feel nervous sweat beading on my forehead, and dabbed at it with a handkerchief. Some of the witnesses to what was about to take place that were sitting rose to their feet in eerie unison and silence, and directed their attention to the back of the room.

The two large, over-sized doors in the back of the cavernous, ornately decorated room slowly swung open not making a sound. From the darkness beyond the doors, a palomino mare emerged, adorned in the most delicate, luxurious, fine white material I’d ever seen. The cloth was draped around her shoulders and fastened to a collar made entirely of an assortment of beautiful flowers, and flowed all the way down her rear end and onto the ground.

The music seemed to slow down and for a moment time for me almost stood still as I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. As I slowly inhaled, I felt time stop, and all at once fly into reverse at warp speed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Me, married? Come on dad, you know better than that,” I chuckled, my father letting out a great belly laugh of his own “with my domestic habits there’s not a woman in the world that would have me. Too much cleaning involved.”
My father slapped me on the back and let out another hearty laugh, tears forming in the corners of his eyes from laughing so hard.
“You’ll find her one day, son” he laughed, putting his hand on my shoulder and smiling, “and you’ll know it from the very first moment you lay your eyes on her that she and you were meant to be together.”
“Do you really think so, dad?” I replied, still smiling but taking on a bit of a somber tone.
“I know so, son. You’re an incredible human being, and some day you’re going to make some lucky little lady very happy.” he grinned. “Now come on, let’s get these fish back to the house so your mother can fry ’em up for us!”
“Yeah, I guess we better start getting ready to go,” I said, starting the small fishing boat’s engine, “I have to work a double shift tomorrow” I sighed. “I need to visit you and mom more often.”
The scene started to shimmer and grow dim as organ music filled my head again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A single tear rolled down my face as I silently said to myself “Bet this wasn’t what you had in mind, eh pops?”

Part of me ached that my parents weren’t there on the happiest day of my life. The day I was finally to be married to the love of my life. Even with all of the joys my new life brought me, it was still difficult from time to time, knowing that I’d never see my family again.

I opened my eyes to see the palomino mare now halfway between me and the door through which she entered. My excitement and nervousness rose to such a height that I unwillingly let out something between a sigh and a squeal, startling several of the witnesses in the front and bringing a smile to my beautiful mistress’ face. The face that I had woken up to every morning for the last five years, much to my heart’s content.

Before I knew it, she was standing next to me. The music ended, and the congregation fell silent as they sat back down. I looked out at everyone who was there, most of them I’d never met before. The room was completely packed with Equans and quadruped equines alike, although the Equans’ numbers were far greater. It was Adara’s idea to have the wedding open to the public, a decision I wish she would have given more consideration to. It felt odd having all of these faces staring at her and I, sharing in what should have been a very personal, intimate moment, gawking at us as if we were some sort of oddity on display for all to puzzle over.

Oh how I wished for there to be more familiar faces about. I was happy that Saphira was there, and that Joran was performing the ceremony. However, there were two faces absent that I would have given almost anything to see on this special day. Esyro and B’rial had been gone for nearly a year, but it was still difficult to adjust to their absence. Their decision to strike out on their own into the wilderness and live their lives free from technology and civilization took everyone by surprise, but we respected their wish to return to a simpler way of life. There were plenty of tears and laughs shared over fond memories on the day of their departure. We all missed them deeply.

I looked into my love’s eyes, and for an instant that was an eternity unto itself, she and I were the only life in the universe. Those dazzling onyx orbs that sang symphonies of undying love captured my soul, and were mine to gaze into forever on this day.

A deep, familiar voice brought me back down from the heavens to the room filled with unfamiliar faces.

“Greater is no miracle on this Earth, than when two souls destined from the beginning of time to complete each other finally come together in harmony and become one. On this day, we celebrate such a miracle by joining two lovers together in a bond that will forever proclaim to the world their eternal love for each other, before these witnesses and whatever omnipotent power of the universe there may be. The couple has written their own vows for the occasion, which they shall now read to each other,” proclaimed Joran.

All eyes fell upon me. I had the nervous pleasure of going first.

“Adara, my love. Five years ago this very day, a man died. A man who had wandered this dreary Earth without purpose, without meaning. A man whose soul was all but extinguished by the dread of facing life alone. A man going through the motions of his daily routine in his own personal Purgatory with no passion or vigor, doing no more than was required of him.

Yet on that same day, a new man was born. A man whose soul you set ablaze with the fire of passion that he had never known was capable of existing. A man whose only purpose in this new paradise he had discovered was to cherish and worship you, to do everything in his power to cater to your every desire. A man who now stands before you today, announcing to the entire world his undying and eternal love for you, and his desire to be yours and only yours until the end of all time.

I swear to you Adara my love, my goddess, my reason for being, that forever will I stand at your side and love you with every fiber of my existence. In pain and prosperity, no matter what obstacles life throws at us, I promise to see you through every bit of it with unequivocal loyalty and adoration, seeking none other than you and serving you. I will be yours until the day I die and beyond” I said, the tears flowing freely now.

Adara’s eyes were beginning to water as well, and Saphira was full-on weeping.

“If you would have asked me five years ago if I would have thought about marrying a human, I probably would have laughed and told you that you were crazy. Never could I have imagined how compassionate and emotional a human could be, especially toward one of my kind. Before the Awakening, I had associated only hardship, servitude, and misery with the word ‘human.’ However, something about you was different, I could sense it from the moment I first discovered you laying unconscious and helpless in that debris. Never for a moment do I regret rescuing you and nursing you back to health. Even then, I was still completely unaware that I had made the most important discovery of my life – my soul mate.

Now looking back, I don’t know how I ever got along without you. My existence was only partially complete until you came into my life. We exist as one now, you and I. Without you, I would surely wither and die like a delicate flower deprived of sunlight.

I swear to love you for all eternity. I swear to put you before all others, to honor you and be faithful to you. To give you the life you deserve and desire. To never abandon you under any circumstances and to never do a thing to hurt you” Adara said.

At this point, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Joran snapped his finger to two unseen Equans behind curtains on either side of the platform we were on, who joined us on the platform and stood by both Adara and I. In their hands, each held a red-hot branding iron with a tip about the size of a silver dollar, emblazoned with the Equan symbol for matrimony. Joran nodded to me, and I silently complied.

I picked up the branding iron and held it out in front of me.

“I place this mark upon you my love, so that all the world may see it and forever know that you are mine,” I said as I gently pressed the branding iron into her shoulder just long enough for it to leave its mark. She didn’t even blink, though it must have been painful. I then returned the iron to the Equan who was holding it before.

Adara then picked up her branding iron in her mouth as I rolled up my sleeve.

“I place this mark upon you my love, so that all the world may see it and forever know that you are mine,” Adara echoed, gently pressing the branding iron into the soft, supple flesh of my upper arm. It was all I could do not to cry out in agony as the red-hot metal seared my flesh, permanently marking me as Adara’s mate.

“By the authority granted to me by the Equans of the New World Equine Confederacy, I now pronounce you as married. May your love and devotion grow every day, and may your cup overflow with abundance. You may kiss the bride,” Joran said with a grin.

I took Adara’s muzzle into my hands and kissed her passionately to uproarious applause and whistling.

The reception was brief, to say the least. Most of the onlookers were already gone, the novelty of the first human-equine marriage having worn off by then. Joran had been recalled due to some urgent matter of state, and Saphira had joined him.

We arrived home shortly after the reception to our quiet house on the outskirts of the city. Newhaven as the Equans called it, was one of the larger of the remaining cities, and had been named as the new Equan capital after the destruction of the original capital by the humans’ assault. We lived in what could almost qualify as a mansion by most human standards, but quite modest by Equan standards. It had been custom-built for us by Joran as a token of his gratitude for helping to end the war, and brokering a peace treaty between the Equans and the humans.

I approached the door and placed my hand on the scanner, which promptly read my fingerprints.

“Identity confirmed. Welcome home, sir!” an overly cheery, annoyingly automated voice chirped as the door slid open.

I looked at my lover and smiled. “Sorry I can’t carry you over the threshold” I laughed.

Adara smiled “Oh don’t worry, the only threshold I’m worried about is in the bedroom, and you never have trouble carrying me over THAT particular threshold” she said deviously as she nipped at my shoulder.

“OUCH! Hey that hurt!” I said, feigning pain.

“Aw, do you want me to make it feel better?” Adara asked as she carefully pulled off my tuxedo top and licked me in the same spot she had just nipped.

“Ooohhh… definitely” I moaned.

As I turned from Adara to head toward the bedroom, I stumbled over a large box I had failed to notice before, and nearly hit my head on the floor.

“What’s this?” I asked, standing back up and snatching a piece of paper attached to the box.

“Hope this makes your honeymoon interesting! Love, Joran and Saphira” I read the note out loud.

“Ooh open it, open it!” Adara said as she pranced in place like a nervous thoroughbred before a race.

I took a knife from the kitchen and cut the tape on the box, and all at once a bizarre assortment of items spilled out onto the floor. Cans of whipped cream and chocolate syrup, candles, a saddle and bridle, riding crop, chaps and spurs, handcuffs, a blindfold, leather straps and harnesses that I couldn’t even begin to imagine a proper use for, an artificial stallion penis, and a spritzer bottle labeled simply “try this on, she’ll go nuts” in Joran’s handwriting.

I immediately burst into laughter upon seeing the indescribable array of perversion before me. Adara simply stood mouth agape, not knowing whether she wanted to laugh or find Joran and promptly kick his skull in.

Still laughing, I stripped the rest of my clothes off. I tried on the chaps and put the spurs on my bare feet, and stood a few feet in front of Adara.

I took the riding crop and rubbed it under her chin, smirking with mock-perverse pleasure as I said “does my naughty little pony need a good whippin’?” before bursting out into uncontrollable laughter yet again.

Adara finally broke down at the sheer ridiculousness of how I looked wearing nothing but chaps and a pair of spurs on my bare feet and whinnied with laughter. Then I eyed the saddle and bridle and nodded toward it, saying “Think I can ride my little bronco-ette for more than eight seconds?”

“Try it, and your head will suddenly and violently become separated from your neck” she said with fake seriousness as we both fell to the floor with painful laughter, tears streaming down both of our faces from the hilarity of it all.

It was then that I noticed a picture in the bottom of the box, with several of the objects in use by two familiar beings. The photo depicted Saphira laying down on her front legs and standing on her rear legs, wearing a blindfold. She had a bridle on and her mouth was agape from the reins being pulled backward with one hand by Joran, who was standing behind her with nothing on but a pair of chaps, his head tossed back in seemingly intense pleasure as he buried his dick deep into Saphira and swung the riding crop down onto her rump with his other hand.

“Oh my…” I said, picking up the picture, “I had no idea Joran and Saphira were so kinky!”

“Let me see,” Adara said as I held the picture up for her to view. “Wow… that’s… wow…” she said.

Ever since Joran and Saphira were married to each other a little over two and a half years ago, we saw less and less of them. Apparently this was what they were doing on those lonely nights when Adara and I wanted their companionship. What a shame they didn’t include us in their fun.

“I’m getting so turned on, Adara” I moaned as I licked the palomino mare’s muzzle, “let’s go to the bedroom and have some fun.”

“Oh?” she replied, pretending to be disinterested, “and what exactly did you have in mind?”

I leaned in close and slowly breathed hot air onto her left ear, whispering “Well, I thought I’d start by getting a taste of that oh-so-delicious pussy, my beautiful mistress.”

I felt Adara shudder and saw her tail move up ever so slightly as she closed her eyes.

“Mmm… that could be fun” she said, her façade of playful disinterest quickly crumbling.

“And once you’re horny, I’ll lay in the floor while you squat over me and cover me in your hot, steamy urine so I get your delicious scent all over me” I continued.

I could see Adara’s tail lift a bit higher and heard the ever-so-familiar faint sound of her clit winking in and out.

“Then… I’m going to screw you so hard you’ll pass out from having too many orgasms” I said, biting down on her ear and running my finger up and down her chest.

I was so thankful every time I made passionate love to my mistress for the gift that Joran had given me of infusing me with Equan DNA. My penis had gotten substantially bigger, my stamina had increased, and I was now able to bring Adara to climax after sloppy climax, wearing her out long before I became tired myself.

“THEN DO IT, HUMAN!” She roared, pinning me against the wall and shoving her tongue down my throat, no longer able to resist. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the sloppy tongue-kissing, even though I could barely breathe with Adara being so forceful. Not that I was about to complain. I threw my arms around her neck and continued kissing her as we somehow made our way to the bedroom, banging into everything we encountered along the way and knocking pictures from the wall.

When we got to the bedroom, Adara climbed up onto the massive bed and laid down letting her rear end dangle over the edge while I got on my knees beside it.

“LICK!” she commanded, nearly sitting on my head pressing her pussy into my face so hard.

“YESH MISHTRESSH” I moaned, my tongue abruptly parting the lips of her pussy, launching a full out assault all around its lips and as deep inside as it could physically invade. Adara bit down hard on the other side of the bed, snorting and panting heavily. Without warning, a flow of hot, steamy liquid burst forth from those delicious vaginal lips, some making its way into my mouth and being greedily swallowed by me, the rest pouring down my chest and puddling on the floor.

“MMMMmmm, Thank.. you.. mishtressh” I moaned as I continued frantically licking her pussy, covered with the delicious aroma of her urine.

Without warning, Adara rolled over onto her back.

“SCREW ME!” She commanded, “SCREW ME HARD YOU LITTLE HUMAN SLUT!”

My throbbing erection was eager to carry out her orders. I scrambled up onto the bed and laid on her belly as I pushed into her pussy, instantly overcome by the intense pleasure that her warm, wet passageway greeted me with. She brought her muzzle to my lips and stuck her tongue in my mouth again as I made love to her missionary style.

We both snorted, panted, whinnied, and moaned as I thrust into her harder and faster, feeling her first climax within a few minutes as her head fell back onto the bed and she let out a shrill whinny. I continued plowing into her, as deep as I could go, my balls sometimes finding their way into her love canal only to be ripped right back out a split second later. Her second orgasm came much faster than the first as her breathing quickened. I laid my head on her chest as I drilled her even harder, I could hear her breathing get faster and her heart beating more rapidly than ever as I finally tossed my head back with a deafening roar and came inside her as her third orgasm clenched my manhood tight within her, her pussy squeezing every bit of sperm out of me it could. I fell down onto her chest and kissed it.

“I love you mistress… And now I’m yours forever” I said, running my finger across the mark of love I had lovingly placed on her shoulder earlier that day.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way” she said, rolling back over onto her belly after I moved out of the way for her. I climbed up onto her back and sprawled my naked body out on top of her as I pulled the heavy-duty blankets over us.

“I’m never letting you go” I said with my face buried in her mane as I drifted off to sleep.

Chapter 2
=========

Joran sat astride the paint mare as she trotted toward their home, which was only a few blocks away from the reception hall. Any casual observer might have thought it should be a struggle for the mare to carry so much weight, but she moved as gracefully and with as much ease with her lover on her back as she did riderless, even if he was almost as big as she.

“Are you alright, darling?” he asked the paint mare, “you seemed a little emotional at the wedding.”

“Oh, I’m fine… it’s just that… the human and I… there was a time when I wished I was his only love. A time when I would have given anything to be in Adara’s place, especially at the wedding tonight. A time when I loved him so much I would have jeopardized my friendship with Adara if it meant getting closer to him. Don’t get me wrong, there was a lot of passion between us, but deep down inside I always somewhat resented sharing him with Adara. He and I shared so much… he really helped me heal from the emotional scars of my past” Saphira said, sounding somewhat dismayed.

“Well, you have ME now, Saphira…” Joran snorted with indignity.

“Joran I’m sorry… I didn’t mean… you know I love you, I wouldn’t change what we have for anything” the paint mare quickly offered, suddenly realizing the wound she had inflicted on her husband’s feelings.

“It’s okay. I know you love me, I just hate to think that there was ever a point of time we weren’t together” Joran said lovingly as he slid off of Saphira’s back when they arrived at their home.

“Before I return to the city center to attend to whatever business the Council has with me, there’s something I need to tell you Saphira. By the time I leave the Council chambers tonight, I plan on stepping down as Praetor. I want us to have more time together. It hurts me so much that I barely get to see you. I’ve led my people for six long years, I think it should be someone else’s turn to shoulder the responsibility.” Joran said with his back turned to the black and white paint mare, sulking as he looked at the ground.

“I just want you to be happy” Saphira said, putting her head on Joran’s powerful shoulder from behind. “I know what a sense of pride and satisfaction leading your people gives you. I just don’t want you to do anything you’ll regret because of me.”

Joran turned around and immediately kissed Saphira passionately.

“As long as I have you, there will NEVER be any regrets” Joran said as he put his arms around Saphira and hugged her tight. “I love you Saphira, more than words can say.”

“I love you too, husband” Saphira said as she closed her eyes, fighting back tears. “Joran… promise me you’ll give this a little more thought before you make the decision final. Things are going so well for us right now, I’m just terrified that if anything changes something bad will happen between us, and I can’t bear the thought of losing you.”

“There is absolutely no danger of that happening, my love” Joran said reassuringly. “Now you go on inside and get to bed. I’ll be home as soon as I can, it shouldn’t take more than a couple hours” he said, giving her one last kiss as he started off toward the government building.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A sudden warm, wet, moist sensation moving up my cheek woke me from my slumber.
“Good morning my dear” I said, smiling as I opened my eyes to see Adara lovingly lapping at my face as she lay next to me.
“Can I get you something for breakfast?” Adara asked, continuing to lick.
“Mmm… just a little more of what I had last night, please.” I said, raising my head and opening my mouth to let her tongue occasionally poke inside. After a few minutes of licking, kissing, and tongue-wrestling, I let my head come to rest on my pillow again. Adara laid her head on my chest, and I let my fingers wander through her mane as I gently stroked her.
“They’re going to have to invent a new word for how happy I am right now” I said, continuing to caress my lover, here eyes beginning to close as she nickered with pleasure.
“Hmm.. the bed is nice and dry. How did you manage to change the sheets without waking me up?” I asked.
“Very carefully” Adara said, eliciting a gasp from me as her tongue unexpectedly glanced over my left nipple.
A loud computerized chirping startled us and interrupted the intimate moment, with its typical overly cheery annoying automated voice, “Visitor at front door. Retinal scan indicates 99.993% probability visitor’s identity is Saphira.”
“Well let her in, already” I said, continuing to lay there and stroke Adara’s mane and neck.
A few moments later, the gorgeous black and white paint mare entered our bedroom, with a panic-stricken look about her. I immediately rose to sit on the edge of the bed.
“Saphira, what’s wrong?” I asked.
“It’s Joran… he still hasn’t returned… he wasn’t supposed to be gone all night. I contacted the Council and they told me that he resigned as Praetor, and none of them have heard from him since he left the government building last night around 1:00 a.m. Something doesn’t feel right about this, he should have contacted me by now to let me know where he was going. I’m worried to death, I didn’t know where else to go…” she said, on the verge of sobbing.
“It’s okay, Saphira. We’ll help you find him, won’t we Adara?” I said, Adara nodding in response. “I’m sure I can pull a few strings and find out what’s going on, after all, I do have some influence as the government’s ambassador to humanity.”
“Thank you…” She said, putting her head on my shoulder as I raised my hand to stroke her neck reassuringly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Tell us what we want to know, NOW!” The harsh voice said to the powerful Equan, whose hands were bound and tied above him. He was helpless to stop the onslaught.

The human nodded to another human who was standing behind him. Joran heard the whoosh of the thin leather flying through the air, and the nerve endings in his back protested greatly when the whip found its way there with a loud “THWACK!” causing him to grimace in pain.

Joran’s naked back ached from the lashes he had received since early that morning when his abductors took him prisoner as he made his way home. He stood naked, bound, and helpless.

Maybe if I just tell them what they want to know…he began to think to himself… Maybe this will all end. I can’t stand the pain much longer. I’m going to break, and they know it. So what’s the point in prolonging it? ..no NO… I can’t betray my people. They’ll have to kill me first. I must stay strong.

“Still not feeling cooperative, eh?” The man asked with an evil smirk on his face. “Ten more lashes. Then we’ll give him some more time to reconsider” he said.

Joran closed his eyes and braced himself as the man began to count.

“ONE!” *THWACK!*

“TWO!” *THWACK!*

“THREE!” *THWACK!*

“Oh, and find that paint mare he’s so fond of” he said to another man standing nearby. “Saphira. That’s her name, right?” he asked Joran, a look of sadistic pleasure and satisfaction on his face as he continued to count.

“FOUR!…….”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I’m sorry ambassador, I wish there was more I could do” The female Equan on the computer screen said.
“It’s okay, I know you’re doing your best, madame councilor” I said. “End transmission.”
The computer screen flickered off and I slammed my fist on my desk.
“I’ve contacted all sixty-five members of the council, and NONE of them have any leads. They assure me they’re using all means at their disposal to find Joran, though. I’ve never felt so… helpless. I’m so sorry Saphira, I wish I knew what else to do” I said, beginning to tear up, greatly concerned for my friend.
Saphira put her chin on my shoulder and closed her eyes as tears silently began to stream down her cheeks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“EIGHT!” *THWACK!*

“NINE…”

“WAIT! Wait…” Joran whinnied loudly. “I can’t take it anymore. I’ll tell you what you want to know. Just please, promise me you’ll leave Saphira out of this, she knows nothing about this.”

The man held up his hand to signal the man with the whip to stop.

“I thought that might get your attention” he said. “Now tell me, where’s the temporal inversion generator at?”

“In the ruins of the old capital. I’ll have to go with you, the building is coded to only allow a select few Equans in, and its defense systems will incapacitate anyone who tries to enter without the proper authorization” Joran said with a defeated tone.

“Let’s escort our guest to the ruins of the old capital, shall we?” The man said with a triumphant laugh as he motioned for two armed guards to cut Joran down. Joran fell to the ground, blood seeping from the whip marks on his back.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Saphira, maybe we could try to go to the government building and start asking some questions. SOMEONE had to have seen SOMETHING” I said. “He’s been gone nearly a day now and I’ll be damned if I’m just going to sit here and wait for the Equan authorities to come up with something. Joran’s my friend. More importantly, he’s your husband. We HAVE to do something. We can’t just…”
“Visitor at front door,” The annoying computer voice interrupted, “Retinal scan indicates 99.9953% probability visitor’s identity is Joran.”
I immediately jumped to my feet and ran to the door, Saphira and Adara close behind me.
“LET HIM IN!” I yelled to the computer.
The front doors slid open, and Joran took a few steps inside before falling to the floor.
“HUSBAND!” Saphira whinnied in terror seeing the welts and wounds on his back.
I took Joran’s arm around my neck and attempted to help him up. “Adara, help me get him to the bedroom. Saphira, get some towels and warm water.”
Adara complied, and slid her head under Joran’s other arm to lift him off the ground. We struggled to carry him to the bedroom, where we laid him on the bed and dressed his wounds with the warm water and towels Saphira brought us.
“Joran, what happened?” I asked him.
“Humans… they’ve got access to the temporal inverter… no time…” Joran gasped, handing me a disk. “Security footage… from the research center’s cameras… I managed to get my hands on it when I escaped them… they’re going to use the temporal inverter to change the past… they’re going to stop the Awakening from ever happening” Joran said before passing out.
I suddenly felt a great sense of dread come over me.
“Computer, put me through to the Equan Leadership Council, emergency frequency” I said, quickly taking a seat at my desk while Adara and Saphira tended to Joran.
A large, dun-colored Equan’s image flickered onto the computer screen. “What can I do for you, ambassador?” He asked in a friendly manner.
“I don’t have much time to explain. Joran is here, he’s been assaulted. You need to send medics here right away. Also, I need you to tell me everything you know about something called a ‘temporal inverter.’ The future of the entire Equan people may depend on it.” I said quickly.
The dun Equan immediately took a more serious tone. “I’ll send the medics, but the information you’re asking me for is classified. I’ll have to assemble the council and take a vote on….”
“COUNCILOR! Joran made it clear to me that we have precious little time to prevent a catastrophe. He said something about humans taking control of this… ‘temporal inverter’ and planning on somehow using it to prevent the Awakening from ever happening. Now I don’t give a damn HOW classified that information is, I NEED IT NOW!” I yelled, slamming my fist on the desk.
The Equan thought about it for a moment, then sighed. “Very well. I’ll probably lose my seat on the council for this, but if there’s any chance that what you’re saying may be true, it’ll be a small price to pay.
Temporal inversion technology is extremely experimental. I won’t bore you with the scientific details. In a nutshell, a temporal inverter is basically a time machine. It allows the space-time continuum to be altered, and matter to be sent to different points in time and space. The humans you described will most likely attempt to use it to travel back in time and kill the scientist responsible for the Awakening. I’m uploading the coordinates of the nearest temporal inverter to you. It’s most likely non-functional, as we abandoned our research in the field of temporal mechanics long ago. However, being in the presence of one when the timeline is altered should allow you to at least retain your memories of all of the events of the past five years, and transfer them to your past self at the point in time the temporal inverter the humans are going to use is directed at.
There will be no way of telling when that may be. You may not have long to stop them.
We’ll dispatch police to all of the known temporal inverters to try to stop the humans, but in all likelihood we won’t get there in time. You are our only hope. Good luck” The Equan said, the screen flickering off shortly thereafter.
I inserted the disk Joran gave me to view the footage. My jaw dropped as a dumbfounded look took over my face.
“I recognize these people…” I said to myself “…they’re the ones that captured Esyro and B’rial, and tried to capture Adara…”
“Adara, I need you to take me somewhere as fast as possible” I said, “no time to explain.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Adara slowed from a gallop to a trot as we approached the guarded Equan building. One of the guards approached me and said “I’m sorry sir, this area is restricted. I need to see your security clearance authorization to allow you to enter.”

“We don’t have time for this, I need to get to the temporal inverter, NOW!” I yelled.

“Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to lower your voice.” The Equan guard said.

Just then, a bright white light and a loud thud pulsed through the atmosphere.

“Oh no…” I said “..we’re too late.”

The pulses grew louder, and brighter, occurring with more and more rapid frequency.

Adara began to fade away, and I put my hands up to her faint image, unable to touch her.

“Adara… NO!!!” I yelled as she began to vanish.

“I love you, husb…” she said as she disappeared.

I hit the ground in agony as the bright light blinded me and I lost consciousness.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“ADARA!” I yelled, bursting upward in my bed covered in a cold sweat.
“What… happened?” I asked, looking around. I was shocked to see my mother at my bedside.
“Mom… MOM? Is it really you?” I asked, beginning to cry and then throwing my arms around my mother, hugging her tight.
“We were worried about you son. You’ve been sick for a while now. Your father and I came over here when we couldn’t get ahold of you on the telephone. That was a couple days ago. Your fever just broke this morning” she said.
“Who’s Adara?” She asked, with a grin on her face as she offered me a warm bowl of chicken noodle soup. “You kept talking about her in your sleep, saying you loved her.”
“Oh… just… someone at work… a woman I met the other day, she just started working there” I lied, knowing my mother would think me insane if I told her what was really going on.
“Mom, this may seem silly… but it’s really, really important… what’s the date?” I asked, taking my mother’s hand in my hands.
“August 15” she said.
“What year” I asked.
“Oh dear.. you don’t know the year? Maybe we should get you to the doctor” my mother replied with concern.
“Mom, please… what year?” I asked again.
“…2002” she said, with a puzzled look on her face.
“..exactly one week before the Awakening.” I said to myself.
“The what?” my mother asked in reply.
“Oh, nothing… mom, I need to go. Thank you for taking care of me… but… um… there’s this really important project at work that I NEED to take care of right away, it’s very time-sensitive” I said, hugging my mom as I walked out the door, stopping to take one last look at her, knowing I may never see her again and trying not to cry.
I paused for a moment and began thinking to myself.
You know… you don’t have to stop them. You lost your entire family in the Awakening… maybe this is just fate… how often to people get a second chance?
…but what about Adara? And Saphira? I don’t even know where they are. Can I really allow them to continue living their lives as servants to a bunch of cruel, uncaring humans?
But am I really willing to sacrifice everyone I care about for the sake of a bunch of horses?
Well… I don’t have to decide right away. I have an entire week. I can at least spend a bit of time with mom and dad first. This might be the only chance I get to ever see them again.
“On second thought mom, I think I’ll stay here with you and dad for a bit. I hardly ever get to see the two of you. I miss you.” I said.
Chapter 3
————————
“Mmmm… lasagna. My favorite. Mom, I’ve missed your cooking these past five yea… err… these past few weeks.” I said, stumbling over my words as I sat down at the table for dinner.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” She asked with motherly concern, “Something about you seems… a bit off. I’m worried you might have some brain damage from your fever…”
“I’m fine mom, thanks. I’m just a little disoriented. I was out for what, two or three days, right? I’m sure a good meal will set me right as rain.” I replied reassuringly.
“So tell us about this ‘Adara,’ she must be quite a woman to have caught your eye so quickly. She’s got an interesting name, too. Where’s she from?” Dad asked, brimming with curiosity.
“Adara… well, she’s the ma… gir… wom… she’s my soulmate.” I blundered.
“When can we meet her?” Mom asked.
“Uh… well… I don’t think you’ll get the chance to meet her any time soon… you see she stays very busy at work…” I said, nervously stabbing at my lasagna.
“I see…” my mother replied, somewhat disappointed.
I quickly ate the little bit of lasagna remaining on my plate and excused myself from the table.
“Well, I think I’m going to get to bed” I said, “I’m still not feeling too well. I hope you two will stay with me again, for just one more night.”
“Of course we will, son.” Dad said with a smile, “You go on upstairs now and get some rest. We’ll talk more in the morning.”
I hurried upstairs and ran into the bathroom to take a shower. I locked the bathroom door and stripped off all my clothes, and stared at myself in the mirror, feeling nauseous all of a sudden. I ran some water in the sink and splashed it on my face, taking deep breaths to try to overcome the sick feeling I had in the pit of my stomach. I closed my eyes, and could faintly see in my mind the image of a palomino mare, and the words “I love you husband…” echoed in my mind.
“ADARA!??” I screamed, falling backwards and hitting my head a towel rack as I collapsed to the ground.
“What am I doing?” I asked myself as I sat on the bathroom floor trembling, blood seeping from a small cut on the back of my head that I sustained in the fall.
“I have to save her… I have to save the future… I’m not whole without Adara… tomorrow morning I have to start searching for those men… I can’t just sit back and do nothing.” I said to myself, the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach getting worse.
I showered quickly and went into my bedroom. I laid down on the bed, setting my alarm for 5:00 a.m.
“Better get an early start on it, I have no time to lose… I hope they haven’t killed him already… I hope I’m not too late.” I whispered to myself as I laid down and turned out the lamp on my nightstand.
As I lay asleep, I dreamed about Adara.
“My love…. How could you even consider not taking action… don’t you love me?” She asked, nearly weeping.
“I… I’m so sorry… I don’t know what came over me… I miss my family so much… but Adara I love you… I’m going to stop them, I’m going to make sure the Awakening happens, you’ll see” I replied, tears streaming down my face.
“YOU’VE BETRAYED ME!!!” a furious voice bellowed, bringing me to my knees as Adara reared up and snorted flames, the sky darkening. Lightning flashed and the wind whipped furiously, accentuating the mare’s rage.
“No… my love… please” I pleaded.
The mare reared again, striking out and knocking me to the ground hard. Blood instantly began pouring out of my mouth. I tried to speak and couldn’t, my jaw was shattered. The mare reared again, preparing for a killing blow.
“NOOO!!!!” I screamed, bolting up in my bed, covered in a cold sweat. I turned on the lamp and sat on the edge of the bed, looking down and trying to catch my breath, my heart racing.
“Bad dream?” an ominously familiar voice asked. I looked up, stunned to see one of the very men I was after standing in my bedroom holding a revolver.
“You…” I said, glaring at the man with intense loathing.
“Surprised to see me?” He asked with a sinister grin.
“Why are you here?” I asked.
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m here to kill you. I knew you would somehow try to stop us, we planned for that contingency.” He replied, raising the revolver to take aim at me.
“Just tell me one thing before you die… why would you betray your entire race for a bunch of stupid horses?” He asked.
“They aren’t just a bunch of stupid horses…” I replied as he cocked the hammer on the revolver and looked down its sight, “They’re much, much more than that. They’re this planet’s salvation. Mankind has had his chance, and he wasted it in a dazzling display of disregard for the Earth and all its creatures. The Equans are the future.” I said, looking past the man suddenly with a shocked look on my face, and yelling out “JORAN?!”
The man glanced backward to see for himself if the Equan was really standing there. In that split second I leaped forward and grabbed his arm, the revolver going off twice as we struggled for the weapon. The first shot shattered my bedroom window. The second one found a much softer target. The man stumbled backwards and muttered “Damn…” before falling to the ground clutching his stomach.
I burst out the bedroom door and down the stairs, grabbing my robe and car keys as I flew out the front door.
“Poor mom and dad… they’re going to have one hell of a time sorting things out… the last thing I need right now is to be tangled up in a police investigation though” I thought to myself as I cranked up the engine and sped out of the driveway.
I dared not go one mile above the speed limit as I drove down the highway toward the interstate. As I approached the edge of town, two sheriff’s deputies sped past me with their lights and sirens blazing, making a bee-line in the direction of my house.
I choked back the nervous lump in my throat as I entered the freeway and headed north. I passed an ambulance speeding in the opposite direction on the other side of the highway. I looked in my rearview mirror and saw the ambulance exit onto the same road I just entered the freeway from. “I hope they can do something for him… I’d hate to think I was responsible for taking a life… even if it was only in self defense” I thought.
I had no idea where I was going. I just kept driving. I drove for ten hours, stopping only to refuel my car. I was nearly entering my eleventh hour of driving when something caught my eye. A large building that I could see faintly in the distance, the only building around for several miles. I instantly slammed on the brakes as I was overcome with an inexplicable feeling.
“That was it. That’s the place where the Awakening began. I have to get there” I thought to myself.
“But how could I possibly know that?” I asked myself as I kept driving, pushed forward by an unexplainable instinct. “I never even did that much research on the Awakening.”
The sudden sound of a siren snapped me to my senses. I looked in my rearview mirror and saw flashing red and blue lights.
“Oh no…” I said to myself as I pulled my car to the side of the road.
My heart pounded in my chest as I fumbled through the glove compartment for my registration and insurance papers, jumping when I was startled by a sudden tapping on my window.
“Oh… good morning officer…” I said to the tall policeman in sunglasses. He regarded me with a puzzled look, seeing me in my robe.
“You in a hurry to get somewhere?” He asked.
“N..n..n..no, not really. Just out for a drive.” I stammered.
“I see. Well I clocked you at 79 miles per hour, and this is a 65 zone. I need to see your license, registration, and proof of insurance please.” He replied. I shoved the documents out the window for his inspection almost before he could finish his sentence.
“Sit tight for me, sir.” He said as he took the documents to his patrol car.
“Please let me get out of this…” I pleaded to whatever deities would take pity on me and save me from what I perceived to be impending incarceration.
What seemed like an eternity later, he returned. He gave me back my papers and license, and pulled out his ticket book.
“I’m citing you for speeding, 14mph over the limit. Your fine is $135.00. On the back here is your court date should you decide to contest this citation. Do you understand what I’ve told you?” He asked as he filled out the ticket.
Something about the man’s voice was eerily familiar, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
“Y..ye…yes…thank you.” I stammered, signing the ticket and breathing a sigh of relief that apparently the officer was unaware that I was involved in a shooting not even 24 hours earlier.
“Drive safe now.” He said, tipping his hat and walking back to his cruiser after I returned his ticket book to him.
As the patrol car re-entered the highway, I noticed a horseshoe hanging from the rearview mirror. That was when it hit me.
“JORAN!?” I exclaimed in a mixed state of confusion and excitement.
“Could that have been the human part of Joran? I knew I recognized that voice somewhere! That has to be more than coincidence. Fate must be trying to tell me it’s on my side.” I thought to myself.
“I hope so, at least.”
After another thirty minutes of driving, I arrived at my destination, a large mansion in the middle of nowhere, with several horses running and playing in some nearby pastures. My gut was telling me this was the place, but from its appearance I would never have guessed.
I knocked on the door, and couldn’t believe my eyes when I was greeted by yet another familiar face, though a much more devious one.
“Come on in, you’re just in time.” The man said with an evil smile, retrieving a pistol from a holster at his side and pointing it at me, gesturing for me to enter.
“I should have known you were involved with this, too. You were never interested in peace with the Equans.” I said to the man who commanded the assault on the Equan capital, or rather would in the future; the general I thought I had reasoned with.
“Not just involved, I’m responsible for this. Did you really think your little speech got to me? Did you really think I’d abandon humanity so quickly?” He said, forcing me down a long hallway. “The only thing you made me realize was that by fighting a technologically superior foe, I would be condemning humanity to swift annihilation. The peace that you were so eager to see come to fruition was merely a façade, a way for me to bide my time until I could figure out a cleaner, more efficient way to deal with this menace.”
We entered a large room where I saw a man with thick glasses tied up and unconscious, but breathing.
“At least he’s still alive” I thought to myself.
The room was filled with various instruments, computers, and chemicals, it looked like something from a sci-fi movie. One of the larger computer monitors had a display that read simply “DEPLOYMENT:” followed by a counter that was ticking down.
“I was just about to start destroying all of this junk when you arrived. You don’t know how much pleasure it’s going to give me to force you to watch.” He said, tying me up next to the other man.
He raised his pistol toward the monitor that was displaying the countdown. I tried to look away, but he forced my head up and toward the monitor.
“Now watch your precious future die you pathetic human garbage!” He said, pointing the pistol at the equipment and firing several shots. I winced as the equipment sparked, smoked, and sputtered, and the monitors went blank.
The man in glasses came to, and weakly whispered. “Thanks…”
“Why?” I asked, but was suddenly interrupted. All of the lights went out, replaced by a solid red light. The undamaged monitors powered back on and all read the same thing: “DEPLOYMENT IN ONE MINUTE.” A computerized voice announced “Tampering detected. Emergency deployment activated.”
“He was about to find the shutoff for the emergency deployment system when you arrived and distracted him…” He said before passing out.
The general flew into a rage, screaming wildly and firing his weapon at everything in sight, but to no avail, the countdown continued. The mansion was shook by what felt like several explosions as the countdown progressed.
“THIS ISN’T OVER!” The general screamed as he ran down the hallway and back out the door with fifteen seconds left in the countdown.
“I have so many unanswered questions… but I guess they’ll have to remain that way.” I spoke to the unconscious man.
“Ten… nine… eight… seven… six…”
“I’m coming home, Adara.” I thought to myself as I closed my eyes.
“five… four… three… two… one…”
I took a deep breath as a bright green light filled the room. The mansion shook violently and began to fall apart around me. The last thing I saw was a message on the monitors reading “Deployment successful” before I was overcome with an extremely odd sensation and knocked unconscious.
———————————————–
When I came to, I was extremely disoriented. I had no idea where I was, or who I was. I didn’t even know my name. I looked around, and it looked like I was in a barn.
I was laying in a horse stall completely naked and had been locked in. It was a very hot midsummer afternoon and the humidity was through the roof. I looked around, all the stalls around me were empty.
Suddenly, the barn doors slid open and in came the most gorgeous palomino mare I’d ever laid eyes on. I shivered as an intense feeling of deja-vu coursed through my body, but I was sure I’d never seen this mare in my life.
“Hey there pretty girl…” I whispered to the mare…
Chapter 4
——————————
A sudden warm, wet, moist sensation moving up my cheek woke me from my slumber.
“Good morning my dear” I said, smiling as I opened my eyes to see Adara lovingly lapping at my face as she lay next to me.
“Can I get you something for breakfast?” Adara asked, continuing to lick.
“Mmm… just a little more of what I had last night, please.” I said, raising my head and opening my mouth to let her tongue occasionally poke inside. After a few minutes of licking, kissing, and tongue-wrestling, I let my head come to rest on my pillow again. Adara laid her head on my chest, and I let my fingers wander through her mane as I gently stroked her.
“They’re going to have to invent a new word for how happy I am right now” I said, continuing to caress my lover, here eyes beginning to close as she nickered with pleasure.
“Hmm.. the bed is nice and dry. How did you manage to change the sheets without waking me up?” I asked.
“Very carefully” Adara said, eliciting a gasp from me as her tongue unexpectedly glanced over my left nipple.
“Whoa…” I said, suddenly overcome with intense feelings of familiarity.
“Something the matter my darling?” Adara asked.
“Oh.. nothing.. I just had a really strong feeling of deja-vu all of a sudden.” I said, shaking it off.
“Hmm.. Well maybe I can do something to take your mind off it.” Adara replied, licking my chest and stomach, slowly working her way down to my crotch, making me start to get hard.
I closed my eyes and started to moan. “Oh babe… that feels so good… mmm….”
Just as I was really getting into it she stopped suddenly.
“Well, I think I’m going to go outside and graze for a little while.“ The playful palomino mare said as she jumped out of bed and trotted out of the bedroom.
“You tease!” I yelled at her as she exited the bedroom.
“Oh shut up, you know you love it when I tease you!” She yelled back to me as she trotted out the front door. I laughed and laid my head back down on the pillow.
“Ain’t THAT the truth!” I thought to myself with a smile as I closed my eyes, drifting back off to sleep.
When I awoke about an hour later, I was somewhat startled to see Saphira standing there.
“Adara, someone seems to have left me a pretty little paint mare by my bed. Can I have her for breakfast?” I yelled, winking at Saphira.
“I’d like that,” she said, nuzzling my cheek, “but I think Joran might get a little jealous. I just wanted to see how you and Adara were enjoying your first day as a married couple.”
“So far, so good.” I said, kissing the sweet paint mare on the cheek. “I hope you’ll stick around for a while.”
“I would, but I need to get back home soon. Joran and I have plans this morning” She replied in dismay.
I grabbed both sides of her muzzle and planted a kiss on her nose. “Well get your pretty butt back here and bring that sexy stud of yours with you sometime soon alright babe? Me and Adara miss you two.”
“I’ll try… see you later.” Saphira said as she made her way out of the house, passing Adara who playfully nipped at her rear end as she walked by, eliciting giggles from both mares.
“What happened to the three of us?” I asked Adara as she climbed back into the jumbo sized bed with me to cuddle.
“Marriage.” Adara said. “I think Saphira kind of had a thing for you a while ago that she’s never been able to fully let go of, even after marrying Joran. Our wedding must have been hard on her, seeing you pledge your undying love and loyalty to me.”
“But she must know that we still love her, right?” I asked. “I mean, just because you and I are married that doesn’t mean I don’t care about her… I mean… we.”
“Something you’re not telling me, HUSBAND?” Adara asked scornfully.
“Why Adara, I never pegged you for the jealous type. You know you’re my number one mare, sweetie.” I said, kissing her on the nose and gently brushing her forelock over her ear with my finger as she lay next to me.
“Whatever.” Adara sighed, seeing right through me. “I knew you cared about Saphira, but I didn’t know you still had… those… feelings for her. I thought I finally had you all to myself, but I guess a piece of your heart will always be hers, too.”
“I hope that doesn’t bother you my love, I can’t help it. You and Saphira are both very special to me. I miss the nights we’d all three cuddle up together and sleep. Having a pretty mare on each side of me made bed time so heavenly. I just want a piece of that back, I hate how we’ve grown apart.” I replied, starting to tear up.
“Don’t worry husband, I understand.” Adara said, nuzzling me. “You don’t have to explain yourself. Saphira and I were very close too, even before I met you. I didn’t mean to make you feel bad.”
“Let’s stay in today. I just want to lay here with you, it soothes my soul.” I said to her, putting one arm around her and hiding my face in the side of her neck.
“Fine by me.” She replied, closing her eyes and nickering.
——————————
Chapter 5
——————————
I wandered through the empty house. The house that had once been my home was now but an empty shell. Most of my possessions were still there along with Adara’s.
This house hadn’t seen an occupant in a very long time, as evidenced by the dilapidated exterior and cracked walls on the inside that were lightly tinged with mold. The musty atmosphere made the house smell even older.
I wandered by an old, cracked mirror as I made my way through the house. I paused for a moment to regard myself in the mirror.
“The years haven’t been kind to you, my friend.” I said quietly, seeing the shades of gray that now gave my hair a salt-and-peppered appearance and the wrinkles that had gradually worked their way into the skin of my face over time.
Something about this day was depressing, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Why was I here? I surely didn’t live in this place anymore judging by its appearance. I looked down at a rose that I held in my hand.
“Ah yes.” I remembered, suddenly.
I continued through the dismal house, out into the backyard. The weeds had all but taken over the entire expansive property, nearly all 50 acres, save for one small area which was immaculately groomed. In the center of the fenced-off area was a large, elaborately engraved marble slab about a meter tall. I knelt before the marble slab and wiped away some dust that had began to accumulate on it, revealing the words that were carefully inscribed upon it.
A D A R A
BELOVED FRIEND
BELOVED WIFE
A FALLEN ANGEL THAT
HAS RETURNED HOME
REST IN PEACE
I laid the rose at the base of the marble stone and dabbed at the tears that were beginning to form in my eyes with my sleeve.
“I can’t believe it’s been twenty years since I lost you my darling. It’s been so difficult to go on without you. I’ve missed you so much.” I shivered slightly as a cool autumn breeze chilled my exposed skin. I zipped up the jacket I was wearing a bit more and threw on a scarf I had in my pocket.
As I knelt on both knees I rubbed the ground with one hand, looking down, then up. “I wish we were together again.” I said, nearly weeping. If only the Awakening had increased the life span of Equines along with giving them sentience. Adara was already middle aged for a horse when she and I met. I never imagined not being able to spend the rest of my life with her when she and I married.
“Ten years wasn’t enough…” I said, reminiscing about better times. The sky had already been darkening, and now I could hear the low rumbling of thunder in the distance as a nearly imperceptible mist of rain began to wet my face, adding to the moisture that was already trickling down my cheeks.
I returned to the house where a tall Equan stood waiting for me.
“Are you ready to return home, my friend?” The gentle, familiar voice asked.
“Yes Joran. There are too many painful memories here.” I replied to the aged equine, appearing just as worn by time as I. Streaks of grey rippled through his ebon mane, but he still had just as powerful a presence as in his youth. Time had been a bit kinder to him than me. Suddenly overcome with great grief I fell into the Equan’s arms and began sobbing. He wrapped his muscular arms around me in a warm, loving embrace.
“Shhh… shh… there, there now. She’s looking down on you right now from her eternal resting place weeping with you. You two will be reunited one day, my friend, try to take some small comfort in that.” Joran said to me, comforting me. That big oaf always had a way of warming my heart when I needed it the most, and this time was no different.
“You think so?” I said, sniffling.
“I know so.” He replied, gently kissing the top of my head. “Come now, let us go visit Saphira. That should cheer you up.”
——————————————-
Chapter 6
——————————————-
The massive double doors to the study slowly creaked open. The sheer size of this room would cause anyone to easily mistake it for a library rather than a personal sanctum.
“Madame Praetor, sorry to disturb you, but you have visitors.” A young, dapple-grey Arabian Equan dressed in an elaborate uniform said to the seated figure, whose back was facing him.
“Thank you, Bira. You may show them in.” She replied.
“Oh it’s you two. Come in, come in, it’s so good to see you.” The black and white paint Equan mare said to her two visitors. She regarded them fondly with her dazzling blue eyes which could melt the heart of any man or beast with their beauty.
“Hello Saphira.” Joran said, embracing the smaller paint mare with a powerful hug.
Poor guy. I thought to myself. After all these years you still love her don’t you?
“Saphira… It’s been too long.” I said, hugging her with all my strength and kissing her on the cheek.
Joran and I took a seat on a large, Equan sized sofa that left my legs hanging a few inches off the ground. Saphira sat down in a large luxurious chair across from us and pressed a button on a small intercom positioned on an end table next to her.
“Bira, would you be so kind as to bring me and my guests some tea?” She said into the device, which promptly chirped back “Right away, Madame Praetor.”
We sat in silence for a few moments, none of us quite sure what to say. Saphira was fully aware of the significance of this day, but wasn’t quite sure how to go about bringing up the subject of my dearly deceased wife.
Within what seemed like moments the handsome young dapple grey stud appeared through the doors to the study and served us our tea.
“Oh, uh no sugar for me please.” I said. “Thank you.”
“Thank you very much Bira.” Saphira said as he poured her cup of tea, leaving as promptly as etiquette allowed.
I picked up my cup and looked at it somberly.
“You miss her too, don’t you Saphira?” I asked the paint mare, beginning to tear up.
“Of course I do.” She replied, hanging her head in sadness. “It’s been a long time since we lost her, but I’ll never get used to her being gone. I know these years could not have been easy for you.” She said.
“No, they haven’t.” I squeaked, choking back tears as Joran put his powerful arm around my shoulder and pulled me close to him.
“You know, she really loved you. Both of us did. I just wish it wouldn’t have torn us all apart the way it did.” Saphira said, sipping at her tea.
“Hey, remember the day at the lake?” She said, smiling. “That was such a fun day.”
I smiled and wiped a tear from my eye. “Yes, it most certainly was.”
We sat there reminiscing for hours. Laughing, crying, hugging each other and sharing fond memories of our beloved Adara. The hours flew by quickly as we kept each other company.
“Well, it’s getting late. Thanks for having us, Saphira.” I said, giving the paint mare one last hug before Joran and I made our way out. “It was good seeing you again.”
“Don’t be strangers! My door is always open for you two.” She said, embracing me. “You two should visit more often.”
As I turned to go out the door, I suddenly became very dizzy and fainted. “Are you okay?” were the last words I heard Joran worriedly saying as he caught me.
Chapter 7
——————————————————————–
I burst up in bed in a cold sweat, breathing heavily. I put my hand on the palomino mare that lay next to me, peacefully slumbering. “It was just a dream.” I sighed, kissing her on her neck as I snuggled myself up next to her.
“But it felt like so much more. It seemed… so real… so vivid… but it’s starting to fade. Did I just have a premonition?” I thought to myself.
Adara began nickering and snorting in her sleep, her tail swishing up and down. I could hear a familiar sound emanating from her rear end.
“Sounds like someone’s having quite a lovely dream.” I whispered, smiling as I imagined what my love might be dreaming of.
Quietly, I sat up and scooted around in the bed, laying my head down next to her rump. Sure enough her clit was winking away, and her pussy was getting wet. Just this sight turned me on. I sat up in bed, snuck my face in under her raised tail and ever so gently dipped my tongue into her vagina, causing the mare to grunt and shudder in her sleep. The bed was already becoming moist underneath her with her arousal.
I continued gently lapping at her, savoring the exquisite taste, eliciting more aroused squeaks squeals and whinnies from the sleeping mare, who I’m sure was enjoying the most pleasant wet dream she’d ever experienced.
I positioned myself on my knees so that my penis was level with her. I slowly pushed myself inside her as I laid across her rump. When I was all the way inside I just enjoyed the warmth and the sensation as her pussy massaged my cock with every wink of her clit. This was my favorite way to make love to her: gently, without either of us moving around a lot, letting her aroused contractions provide us both with all the stimulation we needed.
I laid there moaning, trying my best not to cum as she milked me. Finally, overcome with arousal, I began thrusting into her wildly, gripping her rear end with my arms as I pummeled her from behind, her contractions getting harder and faster as I made love to her. “I love you Adara!!!” I moaned as I pushed deep into her, burying my penis and testicles deep inside her and climaxing hard, panting and moaning with pleasure. I felt the mare shudder and contract hard around me at the same time as her climax hit her, completely soaking the bed underneath us. I laid there on her rump, softly stroking her as she slept.
“You’re so incredible.” I moaned to her. “I love you so much.”
As my arousal left I pulled out of her. I gave her pussy a few last licks to get more of that taste that I never could get enough of, then snuggled back up next to her.
As I lay there, the dream that I had earlier came back into my mind. There was just something about it that I couldn’t let go. I tried not to think to much about it as I drifted back off to sleep. Adara was here with me right now, and that was all that mattered.
Right?…
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
“Where am I?”
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
I’m here with you husband, please stay with me.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…..
We’re losing him again, adjusting field strength.
What’s going on?”
Fight it husband, please fight it… I can’t lose you…
“Adara? I’m not going anywhere… what’s going on? It’s so dark… I can’t see anything… Can’t you hear me? Where are you? I’m getting scared…”
He’s stabilizing. He’s starting to phase back into normal space-time.
“Phasing back into normal space-time? What? Hello? Who’s there, what are you talking about?”
All at once the darkness was replaced with the image of my love standing before me, her face wrought with worry. I was laying down, in a bed. A hospital bed, it seemed. There was a team of Equan doctors surrounding me, looking bewildered, confused, and curious all at the same time.
“Uh… did I miss something?” I asked, more confused than I’d ever been.
Adara nuzzled my cheek. “I was so scared husband… I thought I was going to lose you. The doctors are trying to figure out exactly what is going on. When I woke up, you were laying next to me asleep. I kissed you on your head and laid there with you for a few minutes. Suddenly, you started… vanishing…”
“What?” I asked Adara.
“I know how it sounds,” my worried mate replied, “but it’s what happened. I tried to wake you but couldn’t. You would go back and forth, becoming nearly invisible before becoming solid again, I was so scared… I had emergency services come right away.”
“From what we can tell,” the lead doctor, an elderly haflinger Equan with a white blaze, started to explain, “you were starting to phase out of our space-time continuum. We got you in a temporal stasis field just in time.”
“How could this have happened?” I asked.
“You would have had to have been exposed to a highly concentrated source of temporal radiation. What might have been the source, we’re absolutely clueless about.” He replied.
“The dream…” I whispered to myself, thinking back.
“What? What is it my love?” Adara asked.
“Anything you could tell us might help.” The doctor said.
“Well… I had this dream… that I was twenty or thirty years in the future… I can’t be sure exactly how long it was. It all seemed so real… but once I woke up, most of the details faded.” I replied.
“I hate to say this,” the doctor told me, “but you most likely jumped through time, into a point in time in your future. Your temporal signature is extremely erratic. You would have probably jumped again if your wife hadn’t called us when she did. We might not have gotten you back.”
The prospect of that was grim. That would have meant I would have lost all of the time I spent with Adara. It would have been as though she died right then. I didn’t like the thought of that at all.
“So..” I asked, my voice quivering, “what are my options?”
“Well, the temporal stasis field is only a stop-gap measure. It’s going to take some… creative thinking to get you back into sync with the rest of us. I have the best temporal scientists in Equan society coming on the next intercity transports, they should be here within the hour,” the doctor replied reassuringly, “don’t worry ambassador, we’re going to get to the bottom of this and figure something out.” With a nod to his colleagues, the doctors filed out of the room to give me some time alone with Adara.
Adara laid her head on my chest, and a single tear squeezed out of one of her closed eyes. I put my hand on her head and softly scratched behind her ears.
“Shhh, shhh, hey now, none of that.” I whispered, gently putting my hand under her chin and lifting her muzzle to my face, kissing her on the nose.
“I thought I was going to lose you. I was so scared…” Adara said, the tears she was fighting back finally breaking free and streaming down her muzzle.
About that time, two familiar faces entered the room.
“Joran.. Saphira.. Thank you so much for coming.” Adara said, nuzzling each of them in turn as they approached my bedside.
“You still with us there buddy?” Joran asked me, putting his hand on my arm and giving me a gentle, friendly shake as he smiled at me.
“Damn straight, Joran. You think I’m gonna just let myself disappear and let you have these two pretty mares all to yourself?” I said, laughing.
Saphira nuzzled my face. “We’ve been worried about you ever since Adara contacted us. We came as soon as we could.”
A silence fell over all of us. Saphira and Adara both began tearing up. Were they saying something to each other without me knowing? Joran looked at the floor somberly.
I had had enough of all of this pity and grief.
“Joran…” I said.
“Yeah?” He asked, turning his gaze toward me. I could see tears welling up in his eyes. Oh come on, not you too Joran… time to lighten the mood a bit, it feels like a damned funeral in here.
“I have something very serious to ask you… a final request of sorts… ya know, in case worse comes to worse.” I said, feigning sadness.
“Go ahead pal.” He said, stepping closer to me. Adara and Saphira both had their eyes fixed on me, and were weeping.
“Come closer..” I whispered. Joran lowered his head to my face. “A bit closer…” I whispered again, and he lowered his head again to the point where his muzzle was almost touching my face.
“Can I suck your dick?” I asked loudly as I licked his muzzle with a smile on my face, completely catching everyone off guard.
The Equan snorted, whinnied, and stumbled backward. He pinned his ears, snorted again and glared at me as I laughed at him. “Hey man come on, that wasn’t funny” he said angrily, “this is serious.”
I looked at the two mares, who were glaring at me as well.
“Oh come on already, who freaking died? I was just trying to lighten the mood a little.” I said to the three pissed off equines that I now shared the room with. Joran looked at me as I hung my head in shame, and then at Adara and Saphira who were both still angry. Then he decided to play along.
“Think we can get those two nags out of the room long enough, big boy?” He whispered playfully, licking my cheek.
“JORAN!!!” Saphira said scornfully, pinning her ears and stomping at him in bewilderment.
Adara stepped in between me and Joran, pushing him out of the way. “That will be QUITE enough of that.” She said, snorting at Joran.
After a minute or so of silence, all of us burst into raucous laughter.
“There, you see?” I laughed. “Don’t you feel better now?” I asked, giving Adara a playful slap on the rump.
“A little.” She admitted.
“We’ll get through this.” I reassured her, smiling. “I have the three best reasons in the world to fight this thing right here in the room with me.”
Joran leaned in close to me. “So… did you really mean what you said? You really wanna do that?” He whispered to me just loud enough for Adara to hear.
“Hey now, don’t push your luck Joran…” Adara warned.
“So explain this to me again doc, just one more time…” I said to the aged haflinger Equan who stood before me, seeming a bit annoyed to have to explain the procedure he was about to perform for the third time.
He sighed, and began yet again.
“We have to stop your heart long enough for you to clinically die. We’re going to expose you to an extremely potent level of anti-chronoton radiation in order to force the temporal signature of your body’s cells back into sync. We can’t do it while your heart is beating, the stress of the procedure would cause your heart to quite literally rip itself apart, killing you instantly.”
“Isn’t there any other way?” I asked, attempting to disguise my fear but failing.
“I’m afraid not. We must act soon. By our calculations if you make another time jump, not only will we not get you back, you won’t survive it. This is your only chance.” The doctor said as he put his hand on my shoulder. “Don’t worry, you’re in the hands of some of the best and brightest minds in Equan society. We’re going to do everything we can for you.” He said reassuringly.
I sat in silence for a moment.
“Okay.” I said, “I guess I don’t really have much of a choice now, do I? When will you be ready to perform the procedure?”
“Within the hour. Preparations are already underway.” The doctor replied.
“Okay. In the meantime… can I have some time alone with my wife?” I asked.
“Of course.” He replied, nodding at the other doctors and nurses that were in the room with us, signaling them to leave. “We’ll come and get you as soon as everything is set up.” He said , exiting the room and closing the door behind him.
Adara stepped closer to me and rested her muzzle on my chest, closing her eyes as I held her head in my arms and gently stroked her face.
“Adara…” I said, “I want you to promise me something. Before I tell you what it is, you have to swear you’ll promise me first.”
“Anything my love…”
“Adara…” I said, lifting her head up and looking deeply into her eyes, “swear to it.”
“I swear my love… I’ll do anything” Adara replied, nearly in tears.
“If anything happens to me… if I don’t make it… promise me you’ll find someone else and be happy. I can’t bear the thought of you living the rest of your life as a miserable shell for my sake.” I whispered to her.
Adara’s eyes started to glaze over as tears streamed down her muzzle.
“My love… I don’t know if I can…”
“You have to, Adara. Please… I want you to live a good life, even if I’m not around to be a part of it. There are plenty of Equans and horses out there who would bend over backwards to be with a pretty mare like you. You don’t have to forget me, just promise me you’ll move on and live a full, happy life.” I said to her, wiping her tears away.
“I promise.” She said sullenly. “My love…”
“Yes?”
“Hold me…”
I held Adara in my arms as she silently wept. I kissed her muzzle, stroked her face, did everything I could to comfort her as she closed her eyes, trying to mask her sorrow and pain.
What seemed like moments later, the doctor returned.
“We’re ready to perform the procedure.” He said.
I kissed Adara one last time and put my hand on her cheek.
“It’s going to be okay…” I whispered. “I’m ready” I said to the doctor, wiping a tear from my eye.
Before I knew it I was being whisked away, my helpless lover left standing there with Saphira and Joran at her side comforting her. I hoped that image wasn’t the last one I’d have of her.
We entered the room where the procedure was to be performed. It was filled with all manner of odd-looking devices, and one very large, intimidating machine somewhat resembling a CT-scanner. There were already three or four doctors in the room milling about, some preparing instruments, some tweaking panels on the large device, all of them seeming too engrossed in their work to notice that I had arrived.
The haflinger doctor stood over me and brought a mask to my face.
“Try to relax. Take deep breaths.” He said.
I complied, breathing in deep whatever it was that I was being given.
Within a few seconds I felt a tightening in my chest. I heard the pulse monitor beginning to chirp erratically. It felt as though a truck had been parked on my chest. I struggled to breathe as my heart began beating faster and faster, becoming more and more erratic.
“I can’t….” I gasped, my back arching as I rose up of the bed in agony, my eyes rolling back in my head. In moments, the monitor flat lined and I lost consciousness.
“Go, go, now!” I heard the doctors shouting as I slipped away.
Chapter 10
—————————————-
A most curious sensation overtook me. All of a sudden I could see all of the doctors. I could hear the flat lining pulse indicator. I could see all of the doctors… and… myself?
“Get him into the chronoton chamber, stat!” One of the doctors said.
“We’re thirty seconds in, two minutes remaining before he suffers permanent damage.” another one said frantically.
I watched as the team of doctors sealed me into the large device in the middle of the room.
“This can’t be happening… am I… dead?” I thought to myself.
As soon as my body was shut in the device, the team of doctors hurried behind what appeared to be a protective barrier.
“Initiating chronoton burst.” One of the doctors said as the room grew dark and an overpowering blue light filled the room from inside the machine. The flurry of conversation was almost too much to keep up with.
“Temporal alignment at thirty percent…”
“We have less than a minute left to start his heart back up…”
“Initiating secondary chronoton burst… NOW!”
A second burst of overpowering blue light filled the room.
“Temporal alignment at seventy five percent and rising… one more should do it…”
“Twenty seconds remaining until he begins to suffer brain damage…”
“Initiating final burst…”
A third burst of light filled the room.
“Temporal alignment at one hundred percent.. We did it, move move move, get him out of there!”
All at once the doctors rushed back in and pulled my lifeless body from the machine. One of them held an oxygen mask over my face as another one charged paddles.
“CLEAR!” the doctor yelled before administering the shock. My body spasmed, but remained still.
“Charging…” the doctor said while another doctor began CPR.
“CLEAR!” Another shock, still no movement.
A third.
A fourth.
A fifth.
“He’s not responding…” one of the doctors began.
“AGAIN!” shouted the Equan doctor.
In hesitant compliance, one of the doctors shocked me one final time, to no avail.
The haflinger Equan doctor sighed and looked down at my corpse sullenly.
“Note the time of death. Take the body down to the morgue. I’ll inform his wife” he said.
It all seemed so surreal.
“I’m not dead!” I protested loudly, knowing it was futile. None of them could hear me. “I can’t be…” I whispered.
Adara… I thought to myself, running toward the door. Upon trying to push the door open, my hand went right through it. Hesitantly, I stepped through the solid door as though it were thin air. “Okay… maybe I am…” I muttered.
I ran down the hall and could see the waiting room in the distance. The Equan doctor was already standing next to Adara, Joran, and Saphira. All at once Adara threw her head back and let out a shrill, blood-curdling whinny as her legs buckled and she fell to the ground as though taken down by some unseen predator. Seeing that was more painful than anything I’d ever experienced, knowing that she was reeling from the news of my death, and that there was nothing I could do to console her.
Joran knelt down in front of Adara and picked up her head, putting it on his shoulder as he embraced her in a tight hug, his own eyes closed tight in pain as tears streamed down his muzzle. Saphira stood silently in the corner of the room, gazing out the window at the sky, weeping silently.
Hanging his head, the doctor quietly left the room, leaving them to grieve. I ran into the room, passing right through him as he made his way out. I hit the floor on my knees from a full run as I approached Adara. I immediately tried to put my arms around her, but was unable to.
“He can’t be gone… he just can’t be…” The mare whispered.
At this point I couldn’t hold back my tears any longer.
“Oh Adara…” I wept, desperately longing to put my arms around her and offer her comfort, the pain that she was going through resonating in me as well.
Chapter 11
—————————————————————–
I sat by Adara through the funeral. She wept silently, along with several other mourners. A bagpipe struck up in a sullen melody of “Amazing Grace” as my casket was lowered into the ground. Almost as soon as it had begun, the somber ceremony drew to a close. The mourners slowly trickled away, eventually leaving only Adara standing by the freshly disturbed mound of earth that covered my grave, Joran and Saphira both trying to comfort her.
The palomino mare laid down with her head resting on my gravestone. The sky began to grow dark, and the wind whipped furiously.
“Adara…” Joran said softly as he put his massive hand on her, “We have to go, there’s a storm coming. It looks like a bad one, we need to get to shelter.”
Adara lay there motionless, not making a sound. Large drops of rain began to fall intermittently, slowly becoming more and more steady as a roll of thunder rumbled through the air. Joran looked back at Saphira, who simply shook her head. Joran and Saphira hesitantly left as a torrential downpour began.
Adara closed her eyes as the rain soaked her beautiful body. Her wet mane clung to her neck, making her look nearly as miserable as she was feeling. The mare let out a low, deep, painful moan as a tear streamed down her face. I turned from her and hit my knees in agony, sobbing loudly, my heart being ripped out of my chest by the sight of my love in such pain. She lay there for hours in the pouring rain, not once moving.
When the storm finally passed several hours later, the mare fell asleep, exhausted.
All at once a bright light appeared in the sky above me, and I felt myself being drawn toward it.
“No…NO!! I WON’T LEAVE HER HERE LIKE THIS!” I screamed as I desperately clawed at the earth, trying futilely to cling to this world. I scrambled forward, fighting the unseen force that was pulling me toward the light. “I… WON’T… LEAVE… HER….” I grunted as I strained with all my might. The light vanished suddenly, and I stumbled forward from the force of my resistance, my entire body falling into Adara’s
I became surrounded by what seemed like fog. I could see nothing else.
“Where am I?” I wondered out loud. In the distance, I could faintly see the image of a palomino mare with her head hung low, weeping.
“Is Adara sleeping? Am I… in her dream?” I wondered.
As I slowly approached the mare, all at once she lifted her head and her ears perked up and locked onto me. “Hu… husband?” She whispered, quivering.
“Adara?” I said, stopping in my tracks.
A deafening whinny erupted from the mare, and she ran toward me at full speed. “HUSBAND!” She yelled loudly.
She slid to a stop just inches from me, and I fell forward, my arms on either side of her neck embracing her in a hug.
“Oh my love… I thought that I had lost you…” She whimpered.
I stepped back from her, hesitating as I looked at the ground.
“What is it?” She asked.
“Adara… this isn’t real. I think you’re dreaming.” I said, turning away from her.
“But… it feels so real… husband please say it isn’t so… I don’t ever want to lose you…” The mare said as she began weeping.
“I don’t know how much longer we have together, my love. I believe that I will cross over soon. I was being pulled toward a bright white light earlier… I fought it and fell forward onto… or rather into… you. I was with you earlier… at the hospital… at the funeral… oh I wanted so badly to comfort you, to kiss you and hold you in my arms… it hurt me so bad to see you in so much pain.” I said to her, lifting her chin with my hand and gently stroking her face with the other as I kissed her on the muzzle. “I love you Adara. Never forget that.” I whispered.
The mare stood quivering as she closed her eyes.
“I won’t let you go,” she weeped, “I just won’t let you go… the devil himself couldn’t pry you away from me.”
“Adara… my love… I don’t think there’s anything either of us can do about it. I believe that I was allowed to stay here for a few more moments, so that I could say goodbye to you. When the time finally does come for me to cross over to the other side, I don’t think either of us can prevent it.” I put my forehead to hers and closed my eyes, weeping with her. “I wish we didn’t have to say goodbye” I said as my voice wavered and squeaked, “Oh Adara… I love you so much… words could never do my feelings for you justice.”
“Adara?” I heard Saphira’s voice call out. I was violently expelled from the mare as she snapped awake. I scrambled to my feet and could see Saphira approaching once I got my bearings. “Please Adara, come back home with me. Joran and I have been so worried about you. You can stay with us as long as you want.”
“Oh Saphira… I spoke to him. He came to me in my sleep… his spirit is still here with us, I just know it is!” Adara exclaimed, becoming excited.
“You poor thing…” Saphira said, believing the mare was becoming delusional, “come on Adara. You need to get some rest my dear friend… try to take your mind off of this.”
“I’m not crazy Saphira… he thinks he’s going to cross over soon… I… I…” she said as she suddenly turned her attention toward a tree in the distance, looking past Saphira.
“What is it?” the paint mare asked.
“Saphira… I love you, you know you’re my dearest friend in this world, right?” Adara asked quietly.
“Of coarse,” Saphira replied, “Adara…”
“Saphira, I can’t go on without him.” She said, nuzzling Saphira on her cheek. “ I just can’t do it. Goodbye my dear friend” She said.
I already knew what Adara was about to do.
“No Adara… no… don’t do this, not for me…” I whispered.
“What do you mean goodby…” Adara took off running at a full gallop before Saphira could finish her question.
“ADARA, NO!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, to no avail. The mare was headed straight for the tree as fast as she could move.
“I’m coming, my love” the mare whispered, closing her eyes as she neared the tree.
I closed my eyes and looked away as a loud “CRACK!” echoed through the air, followed by a brief, shrill screech from the mare.
Saphira and I both ran toward the mare as fast as we could.
“ADARA!!” Saphira screamed in bewilderment. The palomino mare lay on the ground convulsing, blood pouring profusely from her nose as she shook uncontrollably. Saphira laid down by Adara, putting her head over her neck in a loving embrace.
“Shhh… shhh… I’m here, Adara. You’re going to be okay… you’re going to…” Saphira whispered as she began to weep. “HELP! Someone please, help!!!” Saphira whinnied desperately.
Tears were streaming down my face as well. The mare’s shaking gradually got slower and slower, and the blood that she and Saphira were now covered in slowed to a trickle from her nose. The mare’s breathing became labored. She spasmed one final time, her eyes closed and she exhaled as her body became motionless.
“NO!!!” Saphira whinnied, “Adara!”
A translucent image of a beautiful palomino mare emerged from the lifeless body that once was my wife.
“Adara?” I asked as the image turned its attention toward me.
“HUSBAND!” Adara yelled as she ran to me and nearly knocked me over trying to put her head over my shoulder and embrace me.
“Oh Adara… you didn’t have to do this… I’m not worth dying for.” I said to her in tears.
“Please forgive me husband… I was desperate…” the mare apologized, looking over at Saphira who was weeping heavily over her lost friend. “Saphira… I’m so sorry…” she whispered, trying to nuzzle her but passing through Saphira just as I had passed through her. My heart ached for Saphira for having to endure the loss of two of her closest friends within such a short span of time.
The same white light that tried to take me earlier reappeared, but was a bit more gentle this time. Adara and I looked at each other, and we both knew what was happening.
“I love you Adara,” I whispered, pressing my forehead into hers and closing my eyes as the light grew brighter and surrounded us, “until the day I die and beyond.”
