We were raped because our brothers crossed a rival gang. This is a true account of our ordeal and hope no one ever goes through this.

This is a true account of what happened many years ago to me and my friend as we were walking home from school, we were barely 14 at the time.

I’m not going to use our real names so for the benefit of this story our names will be Carla and Tori.

After school we stopped to get ice-cream from the shop in the park, it was a normal day just like any other, we were happy and enjoying ourselves, even more now that school was over for the summer holidays.

A boy, he must have been about 16, came up to us and started talking to us and for some reason took our picture using his phone, he was really cute and friendly, we weren’t stupid though, we knew to be careful of strangers, so we continued our walk along as normal route home, the same route we took every day, we came out of the park and began our walk along the road towards where we lived.

We were still talking to this boy when a van screeched up beside us, we thought it was just a stupid driver, the boy stepped back, “I’m sorry.” He said, we didn’t know why he said that, but then the side doors of the van opened and men wearing balaclava’s jumped out and grabbed me and my friend, they put bags over our heads, like potato sacks of something then they dragged us in to the van, the doors slammed shut and the van drove away with us in it.

Both of us fought and struggled with the men inside the van, we could hear each other screaming, I was kicking my legs wildly, then someone or something hit me on the head and knocked me out.

I started to come around again and a few seconds later my last instinct kicked in and I sat up kicking my legs and screaming, then I stopped when I realised I wasn’t in the van anymore, I was in a room and the windows had been painted black, wallpaper was hanging off the walls, the floor was bare concrete and dirty, and there were milk crates and rubbish everywhere, I saw Tori on the floor so rushed over to her and woke her up, she woke up and hit me thinking I was one of the men.

When we both calmed down to a degree, we focused on our surroundings and thought about how to get out of there or call for help, we both checked our pockets and school bags but our phones were gone, we saw a door so ran over to it, but it was locked, no matter how hard we pulled on the door it wouldn’t open, “Where are we, Carla?” asked Tori, she was so scared, we both were.

We want to go home.” I added.

Then at least 15 or 20 other men walked in, I assumed they were all men but some were short so could have been boys, all wearing balaclava’s, the last man to enter shut the door behind him, our hands clenched tighter together, the first man that came in the room pointed at us, he was holding a large knife, like something Indiana Jones would use, “Hold them.” He said, then four men ran at us and grabbed us, despite our best efforts to hold on to each other they pulled us apart and dragged us back in to the middle of the room, kicking and screaming.

They held us in front of the man, clearly their leader, whoever they were, he first put the knife under my chin and then Tori’s, then he moved it down her body, pushed the tip under her blazer and shirt and with the knife edge pointing out, he sliced through her clothes, he then did the same to mine, then with the help of some other men they tore all our clothes off us.

We both started to cry knowing what was coming, men don’t violently rip girls clothes off for nothing, then men holding us forced us down to our knees, they grabbed our hair and pulled our heads back, the leader pointed his knife as us and leaned down, “You both know why you here, yes?” he said, he sounded Nigerian or some other foreign language, “No.” I replied.

“You here to teach your brothers lesson.” He said, “They need keep their noses out my business. You will deliver message to them for me.” He added.

“We’ll tell them. Just please let us go.” begged Tori.

He laughed at us, “Message not words. They no understand words. Actions is what they understand. We will let you go when we are done. Then they will get message.” He said.

We didn’t know at the time but our brothers were in a gang and these men were from a rival gang, this is how rival gangs in our area took revenge, by attacking mothers, sisters and daughters of other gang members, we never thought it would happen to us.

He handed the knife to another man, “It is time.”, he said, loosening his pants as the men holding us pinned us on the floor on our backs, we couldn’t get free, they were too strong, Tori and I looked at each other and just cried, in a strange way it was comforting knowing that each of us was there, even under the circumstances.

Some of the men were filming it all, and to add insult to injury, they used our own phones, we later learned that they were broadcasting it live on social media and that our brothers, friends and family all saw it as it happened while the police frantically tried to locate us.

The men eventually left and we must have been laying on the floor for hours, we were both covered in blood and semen, our bodies totally shattered we were unable to move, the police eventually found us and had us air lifted to the local hospital.

They found and arrested only 5 of the gang members that raped us, the rest have not been located to this very day.

Our brothers were disowned by our families and we were placed in protective custody, moved out of the area and given new names and new lives. It has been hard but I got through it, sadly I’ll never know how Tori dealt with it because we’re not allowed to contact each other and I can never look for her because I don’t know who she is now.
